This problem is all the more interesting when you consider that it 
doesn't show up on any of GCC4 flavors I've been able to test with (4.2 
snapshot, 4.1.1, 4.0.1, 4.0.3...) but it doesn't show up when compiling 
with GCC 3.3 (maybe other GCC3 flavors, but I've not been able to test 
other)

I'll work out a patch following Michael's advice.
