I don't know about others, but I often search for things in the commit
history, and this is much easier when messages are clear.  Browsing
long history lists, looking for something vague (i.e. that cannot
easily be grepped for) is much easier if the first line of the commit
message gives enough information that I can skip most of them.  This
is not possible when say imprecise things like "make the function static".
