What about named pipes? Something like following set of commands:

mkfifo source1
mkfifo source2
mkfifo encoded
mkfifo decoded
cat sourcefile | tee source1 > source2 &
encode source1 encoded &
decode encoded decoded &
diff source2 decoded

Then you can remove all four fifo or reuse them for next trial.
