You run your own IMAP server and then have fetchmail collect your email via 
POP/whatever.  A local IMAP server is fairly fast and has the secondary 
advantage that you can now change email client on a daily basis if you wish, 
without it being a major hassle (for example I run kmail when graphical and 
mutt when textual, both set to point at the same IMAP source).  Further you 
can keep your procmail filtering and it applies to all clients.

Obviously, in the end it's all a personal preference.
