Yes, that did the trick. Thanks for that. 

Just for the record, converting the 1 GB stream takes 

real    40m25.246s
user    37m22.401s
sys     0m13.506s

with the single process (single-core AMD64 3200+, 1 GB RAM), and 

real    51m39.997s
user    48m27.837s
sys     0m11.969s

with the two piped processes described earlier. This is significant :-) 

For the record ^2, mencoder 1.0pre7try2 needs

real    25m13.841s
user    22m15.358s
sys     0m14.384s

but produces garbled output after re-muxing it to a VOB stream. Transcode
v1.0.2 needs

real    54m41.054s
user    47m52.114s
sys     3m19.552s

but cannot be used in a pipe (within vdrsync.pl, that is) so that one has
to work with temp files.
