Well, technically speaking, there's nothing that requires the symbol inside of 
FFmpeg not to be overridden by other libraries. OTOH, marking them protected 
should cut some more linking time, which would be good.

I don't think there's anything actually relying on interposing on FFmpeg... 
let me take a few extra tests and I'll be back to you.
