I do not know if the patch will be rejected (I hope it will not, if 
properly written ;-); anyway, I had a working-but-not-cleaned-up patch 
for supporting ALSA input and output. You can find it on roundup:

It does not apply to current svn, but updating it should be easy... 
Also, if I remember well the needed cleanups should not be too difficult 
or time-consuming.
