AVI is a mess due to lack of design.

I disagree about MPEG being a mess.  It is perfectly suited to its
intended purpose.  I have never claimed it to be fully featured.

MOV, with its derivative MP4, and MXF are indeed a mess by design.
The ironic thing is that nobody in the industry likes those formats.
