OED has "matrices" as the primary plural form (with distinct US and
British pronunciations), but also lists "matrixes" for current use.
It documents the older plural spellings "matreces" and "mattrices".
It has quotations using the "matrixes" spelling dating back to 1651,
so it's not a recent development.

That said, I'm American and I've always used "matrices". In the
supplied quotations, "matrices" is also by far the most common way of
spelling it.
