I'm all for dropping those ugly compiler workarounds.  Note that we
would only drop Apple gcc 3.3, not FSF gcc 3.3.  The affected system in
question is Mac OS X 10.4, but it comes with Apple gcc 4.0 as
alternative to Apple gcc 3.3, so there should be no problem.
