That is true for options that exist in all codecs, or most of them, like -ab
or -aq. But there are features that exist only in one codec, and have little
resemblance to any feature in another codec.

In the particular case of the option of this thread, for example, the people
who want to change it are people who know LAME and know that such a setting
exists. What they need to know is which one of the many options of ffmpeg
will change it. Unfortunately, the name "compression_level" does not make it
obvious at all, and no other existing option would.

Of course, most options can, and should, be handled in a common way. But
some can not. I think per-codecs options are the right way to deal with
features that are really unique to a particular codec.

By the way, this part of the discussion is not really related to the patch
itself, rather to hypothetically possible future development. I submitted a
new version of the patch using "compression_level" as you requested: what do
you think of it?
