Now one has to wonder why outdated software is supposed to be more

There are 3 options
1. Fix all C programs 
2. Fix all openbsd systems
3. Convince the respective openbsd maintainers to add 1 line to the correct
   header to be a step closer to ISO C99 conformance.

Its clear which of the 3 if successfull is least work overall.

Besides this, i out of principle am against workarounds before the respective
maintainers of the "buggy" code have been contacted.

Bugs should be fixed where they are, not worked around in every piece of code
touching it.
