In Italian (and other latin languages I believe) there isn't the first
form, for example:

le radici degli alberi
(the roots of the trees)

but there isn't the equivalent of the form:
the tree roots

It sometimes happens to me to use instead the form:
the trees roots

which I naively believed was the modern equivalent of the saxon
genitive form:
the trees' roots
