FFmpeg changes breaking MPlayer are of no particular consideration
to me and neither should they be to you.
These things are almost always easily fixed there since there is no attempt
to be compatible with old versions, MPlayer won't even link to FFmpeg
versions more than a few weeks old.
However that I mistook this string as a unique identifier of the format
combined with the fact that there is no other (public) API to identify
a format makes me still believe that this has a high chance of breaking
quite a few applications that contrary to MPlayer actually want to work
with many/all "compatible" lavf versions. And if we do this kind of thing
too often I can already see people say "no wonder you keep the same API version
for so long, whenever you change the API you just redefine things to never
have been part of the API".
Anyway, I think I made my point enough now and intend to leave this as
the last mail on the subject.
At least it is now documented what this string means. However, if
next time someone suggests removing an entry and just adjust the
documented API instead of bumping major I will seriously consider
eating them alive - you have been warned.
