I split this in many steps, many involving to change some func
signature, and fixed some minor bug in the meaningwhile, I don't think
there is much point into spam the list with all these mostly trivial
patches (more than 10).

If you agree with the purpose of the patch I can just commit them and
then be flamed on the cvs-log.
