For those that don't know exactly what Luca is referring to, this code is 
available in a branch at 
https://github.com/mstorsjo/ffmpeg/tree/applehttp-urlprotocol.

I updated it a little from I've published before, trying to incorporate 
most of the changes that have been done on the applehttp demuxer.

One of the other things missing on this is either a way to signal which 
bandwidth variant is wanted, or sensing it automatically, switching on the 
fly.
