This is bikeshed why does noone jump at it?
Anyway, my suggestion:

tag the very first commit with tag R (teh R00T 0f a11 evi1)
tag all interresting points where releases, branches whatever are made
official name is what
git describe --match R
returns
looks like:

R-3-g1aba7ec

This gives a single strictly monotone increasing number like svn and a uppercase
R to distingush from svns lower case r

Incandescent light bulbs waste a lot of energy as heat so the EU forbids them.
Their replacement, compact fluorescent lamps, much more expensive, dont fit in
many old lamps, flicker, contain toxic mercury, produce a fraction of the light
that is claimed and in a unnatural spectrum rendering colors different than
in natural light. Ah and we now need to turn the heaters up more in winter to
compensate the lower wasted heat. Who wins? Not the environment, thats for sure
