ALSA hardcodes the order: front left, front right, back left, back right,
front center, low freq, side left, side right. I believe it has to do with
how the most common surround controlers (probably Intel HDA) work.

SNDCTL_DSP_GET_CHNORDER seems like a good idea, but the web page you point
to says it is work in progress. For now, testing that a 5.1 and 7.1 file
play properly on a common hardware would certainly be enough.
