a quick google points to this:

iam not sure if this fits your question though.

But in my own words, if i have to describe the mentoring from my
personal POV ...
Its very dependant on the student, there are students who will work
pretty much idependant and ask when they have a question, and there
are students who need alot of active help to move forward.
(there are also students who just dont do anything and just try to
get some money for nothing and there are students who really try hard
but just arent qualified enough to finish a project)

I think whats important is to make sure that each project has a
qualified student (and mentor) and only accept projects that really
have both. Some qualification task that is a small part of the project
that will be done in the summer should ensure that mentor and student
both get along with each other and can effectively get some work done.

From a technical side i think you are the best choice as mentor for
this project as you are quite interrested in it and certainly
qualified. And its too early to say anything about mentor and student
matching up well or not ...

what a mentors job is exactly depends alot on the student and the
project. Id say aim toward frequent communication unless the student
is pretty good at working on her own, make sure work is reviewed early
(a public git repo may help here) to avoid needing big changes later
on. requireing some regular status reports may be a good idea,
requireing the students presence on IRC once a week or so may be a
good idea too. Also before the project starts / slots are assigned
a mentors job is of course to decide who if any of the students are
qualified for the project you want to mentor.
