The cronjob could be just a regular (daily or hourly) call to a script in
the git repository. That's similar to what Linux distros do for the system
crontab: packages drop their cron job in a directory, and do not need to
fiddle with the crontab itself.

At a wild guess, I'd say that ffmpeg.org has more than a few hits per
minute. Therefore, even at its maximum frequency, a cron job can not be less
efficient than a dynamic page.
