The separate gas-option would be utilized for a global tool-chain that
includes a single common gas-processor but cross compiles to different
architectures i.e. a single "gas" path combined with different compilers
paths with different setups that are kept separately from the global

#1898 is about how to probe different asm tools that does not responds to
the "-v" flag thus it's not related to this issue.
