'ÿ' is what I got when using command "cl 2> somefile.txt"  with hexa
editor I got 0xFF, I think it is a non breaking space in codepage 850.

The following version is also working :
cl 2>&1 | sed -n 's/.*ersion.\([[:digit:]]\{1,\}\)\..*/\1/p'


Do you prefer it ?
