I asked a lot of people who I have on email saying it was fine. It was
only after it was committed were there "new" objections from people
who'd already said it was fine.

The authors were not unknown if you look at etherpad there is a full history:

Please remove my name from this patch, the wording is terrible. Every
single time I kid myself that there's an inclination that the two
forks will act like adults, and every time you prove that you are
unable to act like adults.
