These functions return the read value
their replacements return an error code and pass the read value
through a pointer in an argument

The agument to keep them is that returning the read value is more
convenient if you know the call cannot fail

The argument to deprecate and remove them is that the API becomes
less redundant

I have no preferrance which way this is resolved
