Yes, I did look at configure and just copied what I found:

if $ar 2>&1 | grep -q Microsoft; then
     arflags="-nologo"
     ar_o='-out:$@'
elif $ar 2>&1 | grep -q 'Texas Instruments'; then
     arflags="rq"
     ar_o='$@'
elif $ar 2>&1 | grep -q 'Usage: ar.*-X.*any'; then
     arflags='-Xany -r -c'
     ar_o='$@'
else
     arflags="rc"
     ar_o='$@'
fi

Maybe you can convert that into a proper check instead of complaining 
about me copying this approach.
