 I can't seem to compile a threaded perl so I haven't been able to test
 this:

 I also tried cross compiling (which I have used successfully to build
 other things), but that fails miserably too.

 Apparently someone solved this on the QNAP NAS platform by compiling a
 newer GCC but that would probably take weeks of solid effort - time I
 don't have right now unfortunately.
