 Using -framerate instead of -r doesn't actually fix the issue. It's easy
 to reproduce with an excessively high frame rate and corresponding high
 dropped frame count. In my environment using ffmpeg 2.6.2 trying to
 capture 3 seconds of 1920x1080 at 100fps only manages to capture 47 frames
 which results in a duration of 0.47 seconds rather than the correct 3
 seconds.
