 Replying to [ticket:6525 tangent]:

 I don't think this makes sense ...

 ... especially since FFmpeg is supposed to work fine for piped bmp
 streams.

 I don't think this will be implemented (because the distinction you
 request is impossible) but feel free to send a patch to the development
 mailing list for discussion.
