Comment (by mario66):

I have to tell you that your plan to let x265 submit patches to ffmpeg
will probably not work. x265 devs clearly said they are contracted by a
commercial company who has no interest in supporting or strengthening open
 source, see: https://bitbucket.org/multicoreware/x265/issues/533/hdr10
 -metadata-copy-by-default-if-no-icc#comment-56239152
They just want to sell their commercial products where x265 is included,
and of course can deal with HDR meta data. Then of course they have no
interest in giving ffmpeg the same functionality. Currently they have a
de-facto monopoly for this feature and can raise insanely high prices for
their software. They know how key this feature is, and so should you. I
hope you begin to realize how key all this HDR meta data support is for
ffmpeg and for free and open source video codecs in general. If you cannot
 make it work, who can?
This will be the end of free open source video processing. I tried
everything I can to convince you how important this is, I was very bold to
make my point. Now it is up to you to pick up this topic and be the saver
of free open source video processing (or be it's gravedigger)
