I strongly suggest that, the alternative is to first 
run idet filter to find out if the stream is interlaced 
and then do a second run with a deinterlace filter.
Note that idet does not tell you if the stream is 
telecined, this currently still needs visual inspection 
(or a heuristic based on idet output).

I may be wrong but I am not convinced that a frame-by-
frame decision for deinterlacing makes sense.
