2.8.6 was a bugfix release on Jan 28 2016. The 2.8 release (and its
branch) was created Sept 8 2015. So, featurewise and functionally, you
are probably more than a year behind. ;-)

If it must be a release, please try 3.2. git master is preferred
though, that's where features and enhancements are added first.

(I recall some code modifications dealing with mid-stream changes of
parameters, but I have no idea whether that touches your issue. I can't
promise any improvement.)
