I can't speak for the list owners but I can guess: there have been multiple 
instances of broken threads due to people replying to digest messages. The 
subject is wrong, and the reference header points to the digest instead of the 
message being replied to.

If you wish to participate in the list effectively, you need the appropriate 
message to reply to. If you do not wish to participate, you can read the 
messages on the web. In neither case is digest mode useful.

If you don't want your inbox cluttered with messages from the list, your 
solution is Thunderbird. Thunderbird can fetch from your mail server (and 
threads it correctly by the way). You can create a folder for any list you 
belong to, and a message filter will move messages there for you, leaving your 
inbox for 'real' emails.

You will find God eventually - try not to look too surprised.
