 Well, if I could get AVOptions to work properly (see other thread), I 
 could
 go in that direction (although mplayer needs to be beaten into 
 submission
 to support them). The hardware scaling is actually down-scaling only so 
 if
 you try and scale up, it just ignores you. I don't know if that 
 addresses your
 concerns sufficiently.

 I will certainly take care of the tabs.
