This couldn't be further away from the truth.
It's neither nice nor standardized.
De-facto "standards" are not *standards* and I'd really advise against using this.
It wastes battery, isn't available on every platform (that is, it's *not* part of the Web), and causes a lot of accessibility issues.

Only as fallback for ancient browser should it be made available after html5 video tags failed.

Besides, AFAIK the flash plugin can handle an http stream to an flv file directly without having to send a flash "player", and this would allow VLC or other plugins (like Totem) to take over.
Still, having a direct link to the stream in the page is a requirement to allow those without any browser support to use an external player.

I find it a bit of a shame to waste development time on such proprietary stuff instead of advancing open formats :(
