I share your sentiment. Sarcasm seems appropriate here. Anyway...
The Linux kernel has a MAINTAINERS file. I don't think they ever thought
of abandoning it.
Back before the revolution in FFmpeg, it wasn't a problem to commit stuff
to areas maintained by others after getting approval from the maintainers.
I don't see why it can't be like that now. A MAINTAINERS file serves a
useful purpose and is easy to access for patch submitters. Don't make it go
away.
