Applications that use the API can change a lot of fields that are supposed
to be read-only. lav* are not java libraries, where users are the enemy,
eager to produce bugs and abuse the API, and where every single field must
be protected from direct access by three layers of method calls.

If a field can be made read-only conveniently, then so be it. If it can not
be done conveniently, then "/* read-only */" is good enough.
