But keeping the API usable is. Regularly breaking the majority of reverse
dependencies makes an API much less usable.

So the choice should be between either keeping the still widely used,
deprecated API or fixing downstream projects.

It might be trivial for you, but probably not for all the developers of the
downstream projects. Thus if such a notification came with a patch it would
likely be much more helpful.
