I'm fine with this patch or the one i sent. I'm not going to block either.

I think it's more important to see how will distros deal with mpv, kodi
and chromium built targeting 3.0 not working using 3.1 libraries at
runtime because they misuse the api.

We could try to contact maintainers for some of them (The kind that
will try to upgrade to 3.1 soon, like Arch) to let them know about this
so they also update the three packages above alongside ffmpeg and don't
go crazy trying to find why it doesn't work otherwise, or flood our bug
tracker.
