So you think they would outright lie about their sponsorships?

I am more optimistic: I believe there is a core of honesty and
attachment to good code in most contributors, and that making them aware
of their bias would be enough to convince them to try to do better, at
least a start.

But if you think they are actually dishonest and neglectful, then I
concur with your conclusions: they have no business having commit
rights.
