I agree.

Very complex projects, more complex than FFmpeg are on GitHub and Gitlab and survive very well.
It is a question of preference, absolutely not of skillz nor seniority.

For your data point, dav1d is developed without mailing list, and has managed to ship a ton of code in 2years. VLC moved from mailing lists (used for 20 years) to Gitlab and it’s mostly doing fine.

All options are fine, but are unrelated to skills.
