In my experience ffmpeg retains pixel format when feasible and support for pixel formats has been expanding a lot in the last year (especially with libx264 and ffv1).

I have 10 bit RGB DPX files that are decoded to rgb48le. gbrp10le would be closer but this pixel format is not supported as an output and this pixel format wasn't available when the DPX support was written.
