Hmmm?  ranlib is run on the static libraries, look at the rule in the
Makefile that creates them:

$(LIB): $(STATIC_OBJS)
        rm -f $@
        $(AR) rc $@ $^ $(EXTRAOBJS)
        $(RANLIB) $@
